A pre 9-11 oil painting of the World Trade Towers and Manhattan skyline – both Unique and Historic by English artist David Vincent Wheeler
Exploration XI – Oil on Canvas – Manhattan Skyline-WTC by David Vincent Wheeler
This is one of the last paintings from a series of New York works I completed after a visit during the autumn of 1998. Based on a view overlooking lower manhattan from the top of the world trade center towers, it was a bright sunny morning when I visited the site, the two-tower shadows can be seen almost touching each other like the silhouettes of some neolithic markers. The pigeons in the foreground relate to the experience of seeing birds flying around the top of the empire state building during a nighttime visit a few days earlier, it seems poignant considering the 9/11 attacks occurred a few years later. From a historical point of view, it is a unique record of a viewpoint that no longer exists.
